Kilimanjaro Mountain Climbing : Machame Route 8 days and 7 nights

The Machame Route, popularly known as the “Whiskey Route,” is the most scenic and widely used trail to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. This 8-day itinerary offers excellent acclimatization and a high success rate.

The trek passes through diverse landscapes, including rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert. Highlights include the Shira Plateau and the famous Barranco Wall. The route follows a “climb high, sleep low” approach, improving altitude adaptation.

Perfect for adventure seekers, Machame combines challenge, beauty, and a rewarding summit experience.

Tour Itineraries

Day 1:

Board the morning shuttle or fly till Arusha / Moshi, where you will have the first night in preparation for the following days’ trek. Dinner and overnight in a lodge / camp.

Day 2:

Transfer to Machame gate (1,800 m) to start your Kilimanjaro trekking through montane forest to the Machame campsite (3,000 m, 6 – 7hrs).

Day 3:

Today’s hike through steep rocks and open moorland offers stunning views of Mt. Meru, before reaching Shira campsite (3,840 m, 6 – 7hrs).

Day 4:

From Shira you cross the Barranco Valley to reach Barranco Wall and the Barranco campsite (3,950 m. 7 – 8 hrs).

Day 5:

The route takes you through the surreal alpine vegetation on the south circuit path via Karanga Valley.

The ascent out of the valley is high enough to see rock icicles. You will reach Barafu campsite for a rest, prepare equipment and a pre-summit briefing (4,600 m, 7 – 8 hrs).

Day 6:

After a light snack and hot drink, the final stage of your Kilimanjaro climb will begin around midnight while the scree is still frozen. There is a steep climb to Stella Point (5,700 m, 5 – 6 hrs).
