Kilimanjaro Mountain Climbing : Umbwe Route 8 days and 7 nights
The Umbwe Route is the most direct and one of the most challenging routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. This 8-day trek is designed for experienced climbers seeking adventure and a more remote experience with fewer crowds.
Starting from the southern side, the trail quickly ascends through dense rainforest before opening up to dramatic ridges and breathtaking landscapes. Though steep at the beginning, the route later joins the Machame trail, allowing better acclimatization before the final summit push to Uhuru Peak.
This route offers stunning views and a true wilderness experience. With the support of experienced guides, porters, and a well-planned itinerary, climbers can enjoy both safety and a higher chance of success.
Tour Itineraries
Board the morning shuttle or fly till Arusha / Moshi, where you will have the first night in preparation for the following days’ trek. Dinner and overnight in a lodge / camp.
Transfer to Umbwe gate (1,800 m) for registration before starting the hike on steep winding forest trails. The path narrows and becomes steeper between the Linzo and Umbwe rivers. Following a ridge path you reach Umbwe Caves Camp (2,850m, 5 – 6 hrs) for dinner and overnight camping.
Leaving behind the forest, the rocky path follows a narrow and spectacular ridge then flattens on the approach to Barranco Valley. Barranco campsite (3,950m, 6 – 7 hrs) lies below the Western Breach and the Great Barranco Wall.
On this day your base will be Barranco camp. This acclimatization day to prepare you for climbing to the higher altitude. You can spend the day walking around to explore the surrounding areas such as up to the Barranco wall, take in sights of the magnificent Scenario or just rest.
The day starts with a short hard climb to the top of Great Barranco Wall (the local name of the rocky vertical path is ‘Breakfast’). Descend through the scree and ridges to Karanga Valley for a rest before climbing over another ridge to reach Barafu Hut (4,600 m, 8 – 9 hrs) for a pre-dinner briefing and rest.
After a few hours rest you will begin climbing around midnight. You are aiming to reach Stella Point on the crater rim to watch the sunrise. After a short rest (it is too cold to spend time here) you continue on a less steep path which takes you between rocky outcrops and glaciers to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro, Uhuru Peak (5,895m, 8 – 9 hrs). Memorable picture taking needs to be quick. Descend to Barafu for a late breakfast and short rest before starting the descent to Mweka Hut (3,100 m) for dinner and overnight camping.
The return route is not difficult and takes you down a rock and scree path into the moorland zone and eventually into the forest to reach Mweka gate (4 – 5hrs). Here you will collect your certificate before transferring to the hotel.
Be transferred to the Airport for your afternoon or morning flight to Nairobi / Mombasa to enjoy your beach life before returning to your country.
